Moving house to New Zealand

Moving to New Zealand

New Zealand is a popular destination for emigrating Brits for a variety of good reasons, not least the quality of life and the country’s natural beauty.

Even though New Zealand is similar in size to the UK, the population is far smaller. There are around 64 million people living in the UK, while New Zealand has a population of around 4 million. With fewer built-up areas and a lack of sprawling cities, New Zealanders are always a little closer to nature.

For families with children of school age, education can be a deciding factor when moving abroad. This is not a cause for concern, as the education system in New Zealand is comparable, (or better) than that of the UK. Most of the best schools are state-run and state-funded, with some minor costs which may vary. All eight of New Zealand’s universities were awarded 5 stars by the QS World University Rankings 2015/16.

Although there is no visa requirement to travel to New Zealand from the UK, you will need a Resident Visa to settle there. The length of time you can stay on a work visa can vary widely, so it is a good idea to check with you employer before you go. Work Visas are often used as a gateway to full residency, as it is easier to get a Resident Visa if you are employed.

There are many job opportunities for qualified professionals and there are official lists for long term skills shortages and a list specifically for skills shortages in Canterbury.

The process of moving all your furniture and belongings is less complicated than it may first appear.

To start, you will need to book a surveyor to visit your home and gather all the information needed to compile a quote. For a long journey, your furniture will need to be export wrapped and there may be a need for specialist packing materials, so a survey is even more important than it would be for a local move. At this point, you can discuss any special requirements with the surveyor and they will answer any questions you may have about the moving process.

Exclusive Use Container / Full Container Load (FCL) to Port

If you are shipping your furniture and household effects in a sole use container, the container will arrive at your residence in the UK and then be go straight to the port to be loaded onto a vessel.

Shared Container Service to New Zealand

A shared container or groupage service is a good option if you are shipping small volumes or if you are looking for a more economical way to ship your household items.

Our Partner Removals Company In New Zealand

Our dedicated agents in New Zealand will ensure that all the relevant paperwork and customs clearance is processed in the correct fashion and arrange the unloading, unpacking and setting up of your household goods to your satisfaction which also includes the removal of any used packing materials.

Storage in New Zealand

At Ark Relocation, we can provide short term storage while you find a home in New Zealand, then ship your furniture and belongings to you at a later date. Another option, particularly useful for people moving to New Zealand for a few years and then returning to the UK, is long term storage.

Customs Clearance

When your shipment arrives in New Zealand we will arrange for your personal effects/household effects to be customs cleared and supply and help you complete all required documents.

To get clearance for your goods you need to do all of the following:

Arrange for a Customs clearance. To get a Customs clearance, you will need to supply:

  • a completed Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration
  • the agriculture clearance
  • permits from other agencies (where applicable)
  • your passport
  • a full inventory of what is in the shipment
  • the shipping arrival papers (such as the Bill of Lading, Airway Bill, or Arrival Advice).

A Personal Effects Supplementary Declaration should also be completed for consignments containing items that might pose a biosecurity risk. This provides more information about specific items that may affect the risk status of the consignment. Completion of this declaration is not mandatory but MPI strongly advises that this is done.
