Moving house to New Zealand

Moving to New Zealand

New Zealand is a popular destination for emigrating Brits for a variety of good reasons, not least the quality of life and the country’s natural beauty.

Even though New Zealand is similar in size to the UK, the population is far smaller. There are around 64 million people living in the UK, while New Zealand has a population of around 4 million. With fewer built-up areas and a lack of sprawling cities, New Zealanders are always a little closer to nature.

For families with children of school age, education can be a deciding factor when moving abroad. This is not a cause for concern, as the education system in New Zealand is comparable, (or better) than that of the UK.

Most of the best schools are state-run and state-funded, with some minor costs which may vary. All eight of New Zealand’s universities were awarded 5 stars by the QS World University Rankings 2015/16.

Although there is There are many job opportunities for qualified professionals and there are official lists for long term skills shortages and a list specifically for skills shortages in Canterbury.

The process of moving all your furniture and belongings is less complicated than it may first appear.

Pre-Move Survey

To start, you will need to book a surveyor to visit your home and gather all the information needed to compile a quote. For a long journey, your furniture will need to be export wrapped and there may be a need for specialist packing materials.

A survey is even more important than it would be for a local move. At this point, you can discuss any special requirements with the surveyor and they will answer any questions you may have about the moving process.

A shared container or groupage service is a good option if you are shipping small volumes or if you are looking for a more economical way to ship your household items.

To get clearance for your goods you need to do all of the following:

Arrange for a Customs clearance. To get a Customs clearance, you will need to supply:

    • a completed Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration
    • the agriculture clearance
  • permits from other agencies (where applicable)
  • your passport
  • a full inventory of what is in the shipment
  • the shipping arrival papers (such as the Bill of Lading, Airway Bill, or Arrival Advice).
