Guide-to-Safely-Moving-a-Grand-Piano

A grand piano is a valuable and delicate item requiring caution and expertise when being transported. It’s not just about getting from A to B in one piece – moving a grand piano comes with its own challenges! At Ark Relocation, we have years of experience specialising in the transportation of these impressive instruments; we understand everything involved in their careful packing, handling and delivery – no matter how far your grand piano needs to travel.

Read on for our essential tips for safely moving your Grand Piano.

Tip 1: Disassemble Carefully

Before moving your grand piano, it’s essential to disassemble it. Remove the piano legs, lyre, and music rack to prevent damage during transportation. Use the proper tools and techniques, as incorrect disassembly can lead to costly repairs. If unsure how to proceed, consult a professional piano technician/mover for assistance.

Tip 2: Protect and Cushion

Once disassembled, wrap each part in protective padding to prevent scratches, dents, and other damages. Use high-quality moving blankets or bubble wrap, and secure them with packing tape or stretch wrap. Pay special attention to vulnerable parts, such as the curved case, keyboard cover, and soundboard. Additionally, place foam padding or cardboard between the wrapped parts to add extra protection during transit.

Tip 3: Avoid Common Mistakes

When moving a grand piano, several common mistakes can lead to potential damage or complications. One such error is attempting to move the piano without proper equipment, such as a piano dolly or piano shoe. These specialised tools provide the necessary support and stability, reducing the risk of accidents during transit. Always ensure you or your hired movers have the appropriate equipment.

Another frequent mistake is underestimating the weight and size of a grand piano. These instruments weigh anywhere between 500 to 1,200 pounds and require careful manoeuvring through doorways, hallways, and staircases. Inadequate planning and preparation can damage the piano and your property. To prevent such issues, measure the dimensions of your piano, map out its route, and confirm that all pathways are clear of obstacles before starting the move.

Make Sure your Doorways are Wide Enough for Transportation

Have you ever tried to move a big piece of furniture through a doorway only to realise it won’t fit? It’s a frustrating experience that can be easily avoided by ensuring doorways are wide enough for transportation. If you’re moving into a new home, it’s crucial to measure your doorways beforehand. It’s also important to consider any obstacles that may be in the way, such as light fixtures or door frames.

Cover the Piano with Blankets

The piano is a timeless instrument that deserves proper care and attention. While there are many ways to protect it, one of the simplest methods is to cover it with blankets. Not only does this help prevent scratches and dust from gathering on the surface, but it also helps regulate temperature and humidity levels. Plus, there’s something cosy and charming about seeing a grand piano draped in blankets, waiting patiently for its next performance. So next time you’re not using your piano, grab some blankets and gently tuck it in for a little extra warmth and care. Your piano will thank you for it.

Securely Strap the Piano to a Piano Shoe

Moving a piano is always a nerve-wracking experience, but it doesn’t have to be. When using a moving dolly and piano shoe, securely strapping the piano in place is crucial for a safe and successful move. Not only will this protect the piano from any potential damage, but it will also ensure the safety of the movers.

There are various methods to securing the piano, such as using strong ratchet straps removal ties. However, the most important thing is to make sure the piano is tightly secured and cannot shift or slide during transportation. With a bit of extra care and attention, you can confidently move your piano to its new home without any unwanted mishaps.

Assemble the Grand Piano After Moving

Once your grand piano has arrived safely at its new destination, it’s time to assemble it back together. This process may seem daunting, but with patience and attention to detail, you can successfully put your piano back together and have it ready for its next performance. Follow these steps to ensure proper assembly:

1. Place the piano in its designated location: Start by positioning the piano’s case and soundboard in the desired area, ensuring it is on a level surface. Consider sunlight exposure, humidity, and temperature when choosing the ideal spot.

2. Reattach the piano legs: Begin by carefully lifting one side of the piano and sliding the corresponding leg into place. Secure the leg by tightening any screws or bolts. Use a padded piano jack or have someone assist you in lifting the piano to avoid causing damage or injury. Repeat this process for each of the remaining legs.

3. Attach the pedal lyre: Once all the legs are securely in place, attach the pedal lyre to the bottom of the piano. This assembly connects the pedals to the internal mechanisms of the piano, allowing for proper functioning. Make sure the pedal lyre is properly aligned and fastened securely before moving on.

4. Reattach the music desk and fallboard: Put the music desk, which holds sheet music, back onto the piano by sliding it into the designated grooves. Next, attach the fallboard, or keyboard cover, by connecting it to the hinges on the piano’s case. Ensure both components are secure and function smoothly.

5. Tune the piano: After reassembly, the piano will likely need tuning due to the stress of the move. It is recommended to wait a few weeks for the piano to acclimate to its new environment before hiring a professional piano tuner to fine-tune your instrument.

By following these assembly steps, your grand piano will be ready for its next performance in its new home. Remember to handle each component with care and seek assistance when needed to guarantee a smooth and successful reassembly.
